Famous Mural Demolished
Mural by Salvador Roberto Torres
Demolition of Torres mural
A famous mural in San Diego by artist Salvador Roberto Torres has been demolished and will be repainted at a local middle school.
Kristen Taketa is the K-12 education reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune. She joined the U-T in 2018 after covering education for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Taketa's writing style is analytical and can be seen in quotes such as: "The mural was painted by influential artist Salvador Roberto Torres, who helped create Chicano Park and Centro Cultural de la Raza.
Community members tried unsuccessfully to stop the demolition of a 32-year-old mural painted by a renowned San Diego Chicano artist at Memorial Prep Middle School in the Logan Heights neighborhood."
"The muralist, Salvador Roberto Torres, an influential artist who helped create Chicano Park in 1970, wrote to school district officials this week trying to enforce what he said was his right to remove the mural before it was destroyed. San Diego Unified officials said the mural could not be saved because it was painted on a classroom building that contained asbestos. Breaking into the wall to preserve the mural would have released the hazardous material, officials said."
Kristen Taketa's main sources for this article were the artist himself, Salvador Roberto Torres, and San Diego city officials. These sources are reliable because they are direct, first hand people involved with this mural and its demolition.
I believe this article is very reliable and appropriately written. The reliability of this article stems from its sources being first hand sources. I believe this article is appropriately written because the purpose of this article was to give an update on what happened to the mural and what was next for it, and it did just that.

Hi, Nate! Good job. I enjoyed reading. I am curious though, how does this make you feel? Maybe next time you can include an opinion on how you feel about this and what this may have caused for the locals. I agree with you though, the article is very reliable and appropriately written and you proved just that with the quotes you provided!
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Chicano Park in San Diego California it is a landmark for the Chicano culture. Its really sad that the art was destroyed. I do hope that it does get repainted although it will never be the same. Its kind of like the replicas we have been discussing in our discussion posts. Will the new one be the same as the old or will it be its own creation.
